'Avengers: Infinity War' Broke Every Box Office Record Imaginable This Weekend And Is On Pace To Become The Biggest Movie Of All Time

Variety- “Avengers: Infinity War” officially smashed records for biggest box office opening ever.

Though final domestic numbers won’t be confirmed until mid-Monday, its domestic total exceeded expectations for a North American launch of $258.2 million. Internationally, it secured $382.7 million for a global tally of $640.9 million. Initial projections on Sunday showed $250 million in North America, along with $380 million internationally.

Those numbers easily secured Marvel’s latest title the biggest domestic and global debuts of all time. The previous domestic record-holder was “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which bowed with $248 million in 2015. “Infinity War” also topped “The Fate of the Furious’” global opening record of $542 million. The international opening of $382.7 million, which doesn’t include China, represents the second-highest international debut ever. “Fate of the Furious” still holds the top spot with $443 million, including $185 million in China.

The superhero tentpole, which cost between $300 million and $400 million, boosted Marvel’s worldwide total to over $15 billion between its 19 films. Prior to “Infinity War,” the original “Avengers” had the highest opening to date for a Marvel film, debuting with $207.4 million. Its sequel, “Age of Ultron,” launched with $191 million. The first movie earned $623 million in North America, while the second made $459 million.

Over the last few years, it’s been difficult to read anything about the success of movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe without critics preaching that very soon, “superhero fatigue” would set in and the world would grow tired of the genre and stop caring. I mean, it was constant. Articles were written in 2016 before the release of ‘Captain America: Civil War’ claiming that film would be Marvel’s last stand, because after the grand scale offered there, where could they possibly go that would still captivate an audience?!

Folks, the only way “superhero fatigue” ever becomes a reality is if the definition becomes: superheroes are fatigued from making too much money.

‘Infinity War’ outperformed even its highest box office projections and broke every opening weekend record ever set this weekend…AND IT HASN’T EVEN OPENED IN CHINA YET! There’s 1.4 billion people in China. With a B. None of them have even contributed a single renminbi and we’re still at $640.9 million. Making $640.9 million dollars in a little over 3 days is such a ridiculous thing to even think about. That’s like, a fake number. I forget numbers even go that high.

If this keeps up and the nerds like myself continue racking up multiple viewings of the film in theaters – which, let’s be honest, they will – ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ has a real chance at beating out James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ as the highest grossing movie of all time, and GOD I hope it does. The Russo Brothers (who wrote and directed ‘Infinity War’) have such a love and respect for Cameron’s work, even going as far as making multiple ‘Aliens’ references in this film, and he does nothing but shit on them indirectly. Right before ‘Infinity War’ released he said he hoped for “Avenger fatigue” to start setting in because “There are other stories to tell besides hyper-gonadal males without families doing death-defying things for two hours and wrecking cities in the process.”

Guess what, dickhead? There are other stories to tell other than blue alien Pocahontas but nobody’s stopping you from making a kazillion of those! No need to root for the demise of a genre of film that brings a lot of people a lot of joy. Ask, “Why not?” instead of asking “Why?”. It goes a loooooooong way.

Congratulations to the Russo Brothers, Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios, and everyone associated with the incredible piece of art that is ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ on the amazing accomplishment. Much deserved.
